The purpose of the Nicholas J. Murphy Foundation is to provide for charitable donations, scholarships and grants to individuals and charitable organizations that will assist in the educational and living expenses of members of the Armed Forces, with a special emphasis on the United States Navy, to provide free legal services to low income families for members of the Armed Forces that need family law legal services in Central Illinois, and to provide educational scholarships to Central Illinois student-athletes in honor of our son, Nicholas James Murphy, a member of the United States Navy killed on November 19, 2016.
As part of the Nicholas J. Murphy Foundation, we have created the Nicholas J. Murphy Foundation Pro Bono Clinic to offer these free or reduced rate legal services. This clinic will be administered by the law firm of Murphy & Dunn, P.C. and operate out of our two offices located in Peoria at 456 Fulton Street, Suite 425, Peoria, Illinois and in Bloomington/Normal at 328 Susan Drive, Suite 200, Normal, Illinois 61761. This legal clinic began operations in January, 2017 and our goal is to undertake at least 15 cases in 2017 through all of the attorneys and paralegals from Murphy & Dunn, P.C. and to complete at least $75,000.00 worth of free or reduced rate legal services through the Clinic.
All work performed involving Armed Services members must be on behalf of the service member and not against them. We will not represent a case where we are litigating against the service member themselves. The Nicholas J. Murphy Foundation Pro Bono Clinic will assist clients in the areas of family law, divorce, and child related matters. All time spent on these cases are from volunteer attorneys and paralegals offering their services free of charge or at a reduced rate to honor Nick Murphy and all that he stood for. We also will complete mediation in these areas and have attorneys that will act as a Guardian ad Litem.
For potential clients that can afford our services but are in the Armed Forces, we will automatically reduce the retainer necessary to retain our services by $1,000.00 and reduce our hourly rates for all work performed by 20% off of our normal rates. For those clients that cannot afford our services at all, we will offer free (pro bono) services if possible to pay them back for their service to our country.
Thank you to all of the attorneys, paralegals and support staff who have volunteered their time and their money to make this clinic a reality. We will also raise funds to assist in the costs of the pro bono cases, such as filing fees, subpoena fees, expert fees, service fees, etc. We will be seeking donations from all attorneys and other individuals for same. Those funds will only be used for actual costs in the pro bono clinic on cases undertaken and for third party expenses to complete the cases properly. 100% of all money raised will be used totally for the pro bono clinic to operate and no money will be paid to any staff or volunteer as  a salary or payment for the work and time donated. It will all go to operating the clinic for costs and expenses only. As of this date, no donation money will be used for labor costs and all work performed will be done free of charge or at the abovereducedrates, and the law firm of Murphy & Dunn, P.C. will be offering use of their law offices for the administration and management of the Clinic, as well as meeting space to meet with clients of the Nicholas J. Murphy Foundation Pro Bono Clinic.  If we do this right, we can  make a huge difference in the lives of the Armed Forces clients that we help out.
There will be many other activities and charitable giving opportunities. We have already established and paid out five $2,500.00 educational scholarship to Dunlap High School graduates to be used for college expenses or for living expenses to a student-athlete joining the Armed Forces. Nick loved his high school and sports experience at Dunlap and this is one way to keep giving on his behalf. As a result, $12,500 of all Foundation donations have already been used fund these scholarships.
We held the Nick Murphy Charity Golf Outing known as "Fairways for the Armed Forces" on June 12, 2017 to honor Nick Murphy and to raise funds for the Foundation, and for a donation to Children's Hospital of Illinois and for Almost Home Kids. This will take place each year in early June. The 2018 event will be held on Monday, June 11, 2018.. We will again be seeking sponsors for that tournament, both as monetary sponsors and in kind contributions.
Thank you everyone for your kind words and prayers in support of our family. Both Theresa and I, as well as our children Grant, Alec, Nick and Delaney, appreciate everything you have done. More importantly, thank you for any monetary contributions and in-kind contributions, you can commit to making and pledge to make in honor of our son, Nicholas James Murphy. Thank you also to the attorneys, paralegals and staff at Murphy & Dunn, P.C. for their tireless efforts at making this pro bono clinic a reality. As you can see, we are very proud of the young man Nick Murphy became and his contributions and sacrifice to our country he made. Nick was an exceptional young man and we will do everything in our power to make sure his legacy lives on by helping as many people as we can on his behalf.
